Gaming History of Afghanistan
Most countries have a gaming history and Afghanistan is no
different. Some countries are known for creating certain types of games or
their culture is associated with them. Afghanistan, like most countries,
engages in gambling. However, when the Taliban was in power, they outlawed gambling
in the country. Even after they lost power, this pastime still remained illegal
for the most part, but this law is no longer as heavily enforced as it once
was.
That said, today, you won’t find many people of the nation
gambling at casino establishments or playing at online casinos, such as
spinning the reels of Play million slots. However, two
games that are quite popular in the country include Kite Fighting and Animal
Fighting. For both of these games it is not uncommon for spectators to place
bets.
Kite fighting is one of the most famous gambling activities in the
country. The game is played among teams. One team consists of two people. One
person holds the string and is in charge of dipping and swerving the kite. The
other person is in charge of the spool and pulls in the string or slackens it
as necessary. The object of the game is to cut the string of your opponents
kite before they can cut your kite string. Bets are placed on the competing
teams. Usually, the game is carried out on dirt fields and kites can often reach
as high as 400 feet. A match can last as little as a few minutes or over an
hour.
Animal fighting, the other popular game in Afghanistan, usually
consists of dog, cock and quail fighting. This is considered to be one of the
nation’s traditional pastimes, particularly in the capital of Kabul, where two
quail birds are placed inside a circle and left to fight one another.
The owner of the bird that wins is paid the betting amount.
Typically, the fight ends when one of the birds runs out of the circle. The
bird that remains is the winner.
